Hello! My name is Cassidy Westphal, and I am the Early Childhood Special Education teacher in the First Step Program at Kingsland in Spring Valley, Minnesota.

I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2019 from Wartburg College in Elementary Education with endorsements in Early Childhood, Instructional Strategist I: Mild & Moderate, and Reading. I then went on to receive my Masters of Special Education in Early Childhood Special Education from Minnesota State Moorhead, graduating from the program in 2022. I have been with the Southern Minnesota Education Consortium since 2019 teaching early childhood special education and providing early intervention services.

Our program serves students ages 3-5 in a small-group learning environment that helps to promote independence and individual-based skills learning. Our program works to build up a student’s foundational skills in all areas of development while also creating a space where students with diverse learning needs can thrive.

We work with students through play-based learning and targeted supports individualized to each student. We use curriculum such as Learning Without Tears to help expand upon foundational preschool concepts. In the classroom we work on school routines and building language and social emotional skills with peers.

Our goal is to support every student at the level they are at, individually, in all areas of development (cognitive, motor ability, social emotional skills, communication, and self-help skills) while also ensuring they are in an inclusive and safe environment where they can continue to grow and learn each day.
